the quest

This week’s words came from Brittany in the Peppermint Creek Collective’s 33 Scavenger Hunt Game.

……here’s Brittany’s chosen words: journey, compass, mountain top, rivers, wild lands, unknown, ends of the earth, wild wind, latin, miner, farmer, coffee, mother, seeing, red

….and here’s the tale I told using her words…..can you find where each word is located within the story snippet?…..

“the quest”

she left the last bit of civilization
a long time ago
passing a farmer working his fields
in the low lands
past a miner breaking camp
in the foothills
drinking his morning coffee
next to a smoldering campfire

her journey
took her through wild lands
through primeval forests
filled with ancient old growth trees
across cold clear rivers
swollen with snow melt
climbing unknown and unnamed mountain tops
with peaks touching the heavens
and vistas so exhilarating and expansive
she felt like an eagle soaring on the wild wind

guided by a magical compass
inscribed with the Latin word, quaerere, ‘to seek’
in the quest
for her power totem
the red tailed hawk
her yearning was so deep
she was willing to go to the ends of the earth
to find it

her mother had taken the journey
in her youth
seeking her totem
the great white deer
her mother had the sight
and she had inherited the same way of seeing
and although she did not know
the specific gift
that she knew would be granted
for finding the red tailed hawk
she knew
it would be
life changing
